# OpenPencil

> Open-source design tool for turning a brief into editable product UI.

OpenPencil is a free, MIT-licensed design application for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It generates complete, multi-screen interfaces on a live canvas while keeping the underlying `.op` design editable.

## Core Capabilities

- **Prompt to Editable UI**: Describe a product, attach a reference, or begin with an existing `.op` file. OpenPencil creates structured screens on canvas.
- **Agent Teams**: Split multi-screen work across canvas regions, build in parallel, and coordinate shared visual language and navigation.
- **Built-in MCP Server and op CLI**: Read, create, inspect, modify, and export `.op` files from compatible coding agents and terminal workflows.
- **Figma and Web Import**: Continue editing imported layouts, styles, components, text, images, vectors, and useful page structure.
- **Design and Code Export**: Export PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF assets, and generate code for supported targets from the same editable source.
- **Design Variables**: Color, number, and string tokens with multi-theme support.

## How It Works

1. **Describe** — Tell the AI what you need in natural language or attach screenshots as references.
2. **Generate** — AI creates structured screens on canvas; complex products can be split into parallel spatial tasks.
3. **Refine and Export** — Inspect and edit any layer, then export design assets or code without flattening the `.op` source.

OpenPencil uses the `.op` file format for designs.
